Product Details

Palmer's Penstemon is one of the most beloved native wildflowers of the American West. Known for its tall, elegant spikes of fragrant pink to lavender tubular blooms, this hardy perennial is a magnet for hummingbirds, native bees, and butterflies. Whether planted in a food forest, pollinator garden, or xeriscape, Palmer's Penstemon delivers season-long beauty with minimal care.

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-9
  • Perennial Potential: A true perennial that returns reliably year after year, self-seeding freely to naturalize and expand its presence in the landscape.
  • Sun Exposure: Full sun to partial shade. Performs best with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Soil Requirements: Well-drained, sandy or rocky soil. Tolerates poor soils and is not well suited to heavy clay or consistently moist conditions.
  • Planting Time: Best planted in early spring or fall to allow roots to establish before extreme temperatures arrive.
  • Planting Depth & Spacing: Sow seeds at a depth of 1/8 inch. Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart to allow for mature spread and adequate airflow.
  • Watering: Low to moderate water needs once established. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Highly drought tolerant.
  • Temperature Sensitivity: Extremely cold hardy and heat tolerant once established. Thrives in the temperature extremes typical of western and high desert climates.
  • Offering: 1 gram
