Product Details

The Scarlet Runner Bean is the ultimate multi-purpose plant, cherished by gardeners for centuries as both a stunning ornamental and a prolific food source. Known for its vigorous climbing vines and clusters of brilliant scarlet flowers, this bean is a favorite of hummingbirds and bees alike.

Whether you're a gourmet chef or a home cook, the Runner Bean offers incredible culinary flexibility. Harvest the pods when they are small and tender to eat fresh, just like a snap bean. Alternatively, allow the pods to fully mature and dry to harvest the spectacular multicolored mottled seeds, which are perfect for hearty soups, stews, and traditional bean dishes.

Native to the high-altitude mountains of Central America and Mexico, Phaseolus coccineushas been cultivated for over 4,000 years. It was a staple in Aztec gardens before being introduced to Europe in the 17th century. While it became a cornerstone of British vegetable gardens, it is often grown in North America for its breathtaking ornamental screen and ability to attract pollinators.

Growing Details:

  • USDA Hardiness Zones: 3–9 (grown as annual)
  • Perennial Potential: Zones 10+ (overwinters as short-lived perennial from tuberous roots)
  • Sun Exposure: Full sun is essential. They need at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight to produce a heavy crop of flowers and beans.
  • Soil Requirements: They prefer rich, fertile soil with plenty of organic matter. Ensure the soil is well-drained, as they don't like "wet feet."
  • Planting Time: These are frost-sensitive. Sow seeds directly outdoors only after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to at least 50°F (10°C).
  • Planting Depth & Spacing: Sow seeds 1 to 1.5 inches deep and space them about 4–6 inches apart.
  • Support: These are vigorous climbers that can reach 8–12 feet (or more!). Provide a sturdy trellis, fence, or teepee at the time of planting.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially once the bright red flowers appear, to ensure the pods set properly.
  • Temperature Sensitivity: While they love sun, they actually prefer cooler summer nights. In extremely hot climates, they may stop producing pods until the temperature drops in late summer.
  • Harvesting: Pick the pods when they are young and slim (3–4 inches) for the best flavor as a green bean. Alternatively, let them mature and dry on the vine to harvest the stunning purple-speckled dried beans.
  • Offering: 10 seeds
