Product Details

Wild Blue Indigo is one of North America's most striking native perennials—a deep-rooted, long-lived maverick that asks very little and gives back enormously. In late spring, it sends up tall, elegant spires of rich violet-blue flowers that rival the finest garden ornamentals, followed by dramatic dark seed pods that rattle in the autumn wind. Once established, it is virtually indestructible, thriving in poor soils and dry conditions with a quiet, unhurried confidence.

A powerhouse for the food forest and pollinator garden alike, Wild Blue Indigo is beloved by native bees, bumblebees, and butterflies who depend on its early bloom. Like all legumes, it fixes nitrogen directly into the soil, quietly building fertility beneath the surface without any help from us. It is a plant that knows exactly what it is doing.

Growing Notes:

USDA Hardiness Zones: 3–9. An exceptionally cold-hardy native perennial that thrives across a wide range of climates, from harsh northern winters to the dry heat of the high desert.

Perennial Potential: A true long-lived perennial that deepens and expands with age. Once established, a single plant can live for decades, developing an extensive root system that anchors it firmly in the landscape.

Sun Exposure: Full sun to partial shade. Performs best in full sun, where it produces the most abundant bloom. Tolerates light afternoon shade in hotter climates.

Soil Requirements: Remarkably adaptable. Thrives in poor, dry, well-draining soils where other plants struggle. Prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 5.5–7.0. Amending with compost is helpful but not necessary. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soils.

Planting Time: Direct sow in fall for natural cold stratification over winter, or cold-stratify seeds in the refrigerator for 4–6 weeks before direct sowing in early spring. Transplants poorly due to its deep taproot—sow where it will stay.

Planting Depth & Spacing: Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep. Space plants 2–3 feet apart to allow for their natural spread and deep root development. They are slow to establish but will reward your patience generously.

Watering: Drought tolerant once established. Water regularly during the first growing season to encourage deep root development. Thereafter, occasional deep watering is sufficient. Does not tolerate consistently wet or waterlogged conditions.

Temperature Sensitivity: Highly tolerant of both cold and heat extremes. Emerges reliably after hard winters and handles the dry heat of the high desert with ease. Late spring frosts may nip emerging growth but rarely cause lasting damage.
